Sometimes, you may find it difficult to be as loving as you know you can be. It’s an understandable and common challenge because, at times, our ability to love freely gets blocked by fear. I am not referring to the kind of “fight or flight” fear you experience when faced with a perceived threat (e.g.: the feeling that follows from getting cut off in traffic). I mean subtler fears—ones that can actually be more paralyzing—fear of being vulnerable, fear of not being lovable or good enough, fear of rejection, fear of abandonment.
Regardless of the root cause of your fear, it’s holding you back and preventing you from giving and receiving love to its fullest. Fortunately, there is something you can do to release your fear and its stranglehold on your life. Bring your worries, fears, and concerns to God by creating a “Prayer/Serenity Box”.
Find a container (a shoe box, a small wooden crate, a jar, a metal can). Decorate the container and label it: Prayer Box or Serenity Box. Then, take a piece of paper and tear or cut it into small, individual pieces that are similar in size to those found in a fortune cookie. On each one, list a single worry, fear, concern, or problem you are facing. One at a time, place each concern into the box and release it in prayer to God. You can create your own prayer, or you can use the one that follows:
I need your help. I am unable to overcome (state your specific concern) on my own. But, I know that I can fully surrender it to you, and that you will help me resolve it in the best possible way.
Once you have released your concern, you no longer need to worry or fret about it. The issue is now God’s to handle. However, if you find yourself worrying about it again, simply go to your box, take out that particular issue, and repeat the process of release and prayer.
